Three states in the United States, namely Hawaii, Vermont and Maine, currently ban mercury-containing fluorescent lamps.

The US state of Hawaii passed HB 192 on July 5, 2023, banning the manufacture and sale of mercury-containing fluorescent lamps in the state. The bill will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will ban compact fluorescent lamps with screw or card bases and will take effect on January 1, 2025. Phase two will ban pin-type compact fluorescent lamps and linear fluorescent lamps, effective January 1, 2026.

Vermont, USA, passed Bill H 500 on March 8, 2023, banning the manufacture and sale of mercury-containing fluorescent lamps in the state. The bill will take effect on January 1, 2024.

Maine, USA, passed HP 1160 on July 20, 2023, banning the manufacture and sale of mercury-containing fluorescent lamps in the state. The bill will take effect on January 1, 2026.

Therefore, three states in the United States, namely Hawaii, Vermont and Maine, currently ban mercury-containing fluorescent lamps.
